India-China Ferry Command: Activated 16 July 1942 by combining of Trans-India Ferry Command and Assam-Burma-China Ferry Command. Inactivated 1 Dec 1942 when the India-China Wing, ATC (ICWATC) was activated.
The 1st Ferrying Group was constituted by the Adjutant General on 3 March 1942 and activated 7 Mar 42.
The 3d, 6th, and 13th Ferrying Squadrons were activated at Pope Field, Fort Bragg, N.C., on 7 March, instead of at West Palm Beach as originally ordered. Before their activation they were transferred from the jurisdiction of the Ferrying Command to 1st Ferry Group.
The 1st Ferrying Group and its three ferrying squadrons were destined for transport service in the China-Burma-India theater and left the United States by boat on 17 March. They arrived at Karachi, India in May and thereafter operated under the control of the Commanding General of the Tenth Air Force until the establishment of the India-China Wing of the Air Transport Command on 1 December 1942. The group moved to Dinjan, Assam, India for a short period, then it transferred over to Chabua in the summer of 1942 and started "Hump" operations.
In December 1942, the group was transferred to the newly-created Air Transport Command India-China Wing. The first C-46 Commandos were received in the spring of 1943, as a complement to C-47s.
On 1 July 1943, the unit was renamed 1st Transport Group. It was composed of the following squadrons:
- 3rd Ferry Squadron
- 6th Ferry Squadron
- 13 Ferry Squadron
India-China Wing (1942-1944) / India-China Division (1944-1946)
Between 1 December 1942 and 1 December 1943, the India-China Wing's flying components were transport groups and squadrons. After that ATC discarded the standard group & squadron structure and adopted a more flexible system, identifying its units by their station number. The list of groups below thus only pertains to the early days of the India-China Wing, whereas station numbers later assigned are listed in the airport section of this website:
